Best Mindbody Alternatives (2026): Compared Honestly

Fitness Industry Holiday Strategies

Mindbody is the default for boutique studios, and defaults get expensive.

The short answer

For most independent yoga, Pilates, barre and boutique fitness studios, Recess is the strongest Mindbody alternative in 2026: it is free, with no tiers and no per-location fee, and it covers class packs, memberships, waitlists, retail and instructor pay. Vagaro is the cheapest paid option at $30 a month if you run a single calendar. Momence starts free and is the closest thing to a like-for-like Mindbody replacement. Mindbody itself is still worth its price for one reason, and one only: its consumer app puts your classes in front of people who have never heard of you, and nothing on this list matches that.

How This List Was Built

Every price here was read on the vendor's own pricing page or help centre on 8 September 2026, and the date matters because these change. Where a company does not publish a price, this article says so instead of guessing or repeating a number from a review site.

Recess is our own product, so treat the enthusiasm accordingly. What we have tried to do is give every competitor a real reason to be chosen and name at least one thing each does better than we do.

Why Studios Leave Mindbody

Almost nobody leaves because the software stopped working. They leave for three reasons, in this order.

The bill grows. Mindbody publishes a floor of $79 a month per location, and that is a floor rather than a price. Tiers above it are not published, they route to a sales call, and the add-ons are where a small studio's budget goes. Two locations means two subscriptions.

The contract outlasts the enthusiasm. Long terms are common, which means the decision you made in a good month follows you through a bad one.

And the marketplace cuts both ways. Mindbody's consumer app genuinely brings you new clients. It also introduces your regulars to the studio down the road, and takes a commission on the way through.

If the marketplace is bringing you real business, none of this is a reason to leave. If it is not, you are paying for a shop window you never look out of.

Recess

Best for independent studios that want everything without a monthly bill. Free, no tiers.

Recess is free. Not a limited tier with the useful parts locked away: the whole thing.

For a boutique studio that means class packs and memberships on one roster, so a client on a ten-class pack and a client on unlimited monthly sit in the same schedule without you thinking about it. Waitlists that refill themselves when somebody cancels at 6am. Reformer, bike and mat capacity with an actual seat map, so a client books spot 4 rather than "a spot". Workshops and teacher training sold as their own thing rather than bodged into the class schedule. Retail at the front desk for grip socks and water bottles. Failed payment recovery that chases a declined card without you noticing it declined. Per-class instructor pay, including the cover teacher who took Tuesday. And your own app, under your studio's name, in the App Store and Play Store, at no extra cost.

Where Recess loses. We have fewer third-party integrations than Mindbody. If your studio runs on a specific external tool, check it exists before you move. And we have no consumer marketplace. That is the honest gap, and for some studios it is the whole decision.

Mindbody

Best for studios where discovery by strangers drives growth. From $79/mo per location.

The marketplace is the product. Mindbody's consumer app is where people browse for a class the way they browse for a restaurant, and if you are a new studio in a competitive city, that reach is difficult to replicate with a marketing budget.

Everything else Mindbody does, the platforms below also do. Scheduling, memberships, billing, reporting: all present, all fine. You are not paying for those. You are paying for the shop window.

Where Mindbody loses. Its pricing above the $79 floor is not published, which makes it hard to compare honestly against anything. It is priced per location, so a second studio doubles the line. And the marketplace that brings you clients also shows those clients everyone else.

The question to ask yourself is simple: what share of last month's new members came through the Mindbody app? If you can answer that and the number is meaningful, stay. If you cannot answer it, that is your answer.

Vagaro

Best for a solo instructor or a single-room studio. $30/mo for one bookable calendar.

Vagaro is the cheapest credible option here, and it has its own consumer marketplace, which is unusual at this price. For a single teacher renting a room, it is hard to argue with.

Where Vagaro loses. The price is per bookable calendar. Add a second teacher, then a third, then a second location, and the bill grows in a way that is easy to underestimate at signup. It also reads more like salon software than studio software, because that is where it came from, and it shows in places.

Momence

Best for studios wanting the closest like-for-like Mindbody swap. Free, then $60 and $199.

Momence is the most direct replacement on this list. The free tier is genuinely usable, not a demo, and the paid tiers at $60 and $199 cover most independent studios.

Where Momence loses. The card rate is 3.9% plus 30 cents, which is high, and on a studio turning over real money the processing cost can exceed what you saved on the subscription. A branded app is $250 a month on top, which is more than most of the subscriptions on this page.

Walla

Best for boutique studios that care about front-of-house. $320/mo per location.

Walla was built for boutique fitness specifically, and it shows in the parts of the day a studio owner actually touches: the front desk, the check-in, the member's experience of booking. If that polish matters to you, it is the most considered option here.

Where Walla loses. It is the most expensive published price on this list at $320 a month for Core and $599 for Pro, per location, with Stripe processing on top of that.

Glofox

Best for studios already inside the ABC Fitness ecosystem. Pricing not published.

Glofox has a strong branded app and a community feed that some studios genuinely use.

Where Glofox loses. It publishes no pricing, so you cannot compare it without a sales call. And it is worth knowing that Glofox is part of ABC Fitness, which sits alongside Mindbody in the same corner of the market. If you are leaving Mindbody to get away from a large owner, look at who you are moving to.

Mariana Tek

Best for multi-site boutique chains. Pricing not published.

Mariana Tek is built for chains with a head office rather than for a single studio, and if that is you, it deserves a look.

Where Mariana Tek loses. It publishes no prices anywhere. For a single-site studio, that alone usually settles it.

What to Check Before You Move

Ask these five questions of whoever you are considering, and get the answers in writing.

  • What does a card sale actually cost? The subscription is the number they advertise. The processing rate is the number you pay all year.
  • Is the price per location? A second studio can double a bill that looked reasonable for one.
  • Is a branded app included or an add-on? The answers here range from free to $250 a month.
  • How long is the contract, and what does leaving cost? Ask specifically about exit fees and notice.
  • What comes across in a migration, and what gets retyped? Class history, memberships and outstanding packs are the ones that hurt.

Recess Fits Here

If you run an independent yoga, Pilates or boutique studio and the Mindbody bill is what brought you to this page, Recess is worth twenty minutes. It is free, there are no tiers, and the branded app is included rather than sold to you later.

If your new members come from the Mindbody app, stay where you are. That is a real advantage and we do not have it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest Mindbody alternative?

Recess is free with no tiers, no per-location fee and no feature gates. Among paid options, Vagaro is the lowest published price at $30 a month for a single bookable calendar, and Momence has a free tier before its $60 and $199 plans.

Does Mindbody charge per location?

Yes. Mindbody's published floor is $79 a month per location, so a studio with two sites pays it twice. Tier prices above that floor are not published and route to a sales conversation.

Which Mindbody alternative has a consumer marketplace?

Vagaro has its own marketplace, and it is unusual at that price. Recess does not. If being discovered by people who have never heard of your studio is central to how you fill classes, that is the single strongest argument for staying with Mindbody.

Is a branded studio app included or extra?

It varies more than anything else on this list. Recess includes a branded app in both app stores at no cost. Momence charges $250 a month for one. Others quote on request.

What does switching from Mindbody actually cost?

The subscription saving is the easy part. The real costs are the processing rate on every card sale, whether the price is per location, whether a branded app is an add-on, and the staff time to re-enter anything that does not migrate. Ask about all four before you compare monthly prices.

Will I lose my class history if I switch?

That depends entirely on the platform and is the question most worth asking. Get a specific answer about class history, active memberships and outstanding class packs before you cancel anything, and do not accept "we will help you migrate" as an answer.

Is Mindbody worth it for a small studio?

Only if the marketplace is working for you. Look at where last month's new members came from. If a meaningful share arrived through the Mindbody app, the cost is buying you something real. If you cannot tell, you are paying for a channel you are not using.
